R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Conservatives say they need it in shutdown debate

  Unit 2
The government shutdown has had many different things that have caused it, but House Republicans are calling it an issue of respect.  One Republican representative said that, "Republicans are in a position where they don't want to cave in because it sets a bad precedent that the Senate would be somewhat dictating how the House runs."  Another Republican House member expanded saying, "we're not going to be disrespected."  Republican House members think that the Senate is not being reasonable, while the Democratically-held Senate thinks the same of the House.  This issue of Obamacare was passed in 2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court last year.  The House is now trying to defund the program of Obamacare.  The House has proposed many compromises with this issue, but the Senate does not want to give in.  Obama and the Senate leader have rejected GOP efforts to use the government funding issue in seeking partisan goals.  Obama is saying that the GOP is getting this disrespect because of their attitude in trying to just defund Obamacare because they don't like it.
This relates to our current unit because we are talking about reasons that people vote for certain candidates.  People are now forming opinions because of the government shutdown and will vote accordingly.  My personal opinion on the issue is that the GOP is getting too much of the blame for the government shutdown.  People are just saying that the GOP is unwilling to compromise.  But from this article, we see that both parties are unwilling to compromise.  I think that we should get rid of Obamacare, but I know we need to compromise somehow because of differentiating opinions.  We need to get this problem fixed quickly before there are drastic effects.

  1. I like that you expressed a different view than that expressed in class. I don't know all of the motivations and factors behind the government standup, but I think you are right in saying that both parties are at least somewhat at fault.

  2. Both of the parties think they're are being disrespected in turn making the government shutdown more a fight between Democrats and Republicans. The Republicans (House of Rep) showing that they have power to defund Obamacare and the Democrats (Senate) also has power over the Republicans. None of the parties want to relinquish their acts of power over the other because they don't want the other side to bully them around in politics.

  3. I also think that the lack of respect either one is getting makes them more stubborn. When you are not respected you tend to build up a wall and want the person who disrespected you to lose. If that makes sense. So the more disrespect that comes out I think the harder it will be for either side to compromise. If more respect and a less rough approach to a deal is made it could make a bit of a difference.

  4. Yeah I agree with you Nathan. With more disrespect comes more disagreement. Thankfully we got something passed for a short period of time now, but the disrespect that happened in this government shutdown is going to cause more disagreements in the future. The compromise that they made is only short-term. This government shutdown business is only going to come back and then even more disrespect is going to be spread.
