Racial Profiling Costs in Arizona

Unit 5
An Arizona county's racial profiling will cost the county at least $22 million.  The cost is specifically for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's tough "cracking down on immigration laws."  A court ruled that it wasn't immigration law enforcement but was racial and ethnic profiling and deserved a penalty.  The sheriff's office was apparently targeting a lot of vehicles with drivers that had darker skin or were Latino.  They were scrutinizing and detaining these vehicles more often than others.  The sheriff's lawyers are appealing the decision.  The judge ordered a retraining of the sheriff's office.  The $22 million cost comes from this retraining and the maintaining of a community advisory board.
I thought this article was good because we already talked a little bit about this in class.  I agree that the sheriff was being very unfair.  You can't just stop people on the road because they look like illegals.  I'm glad that the county finally cracked down and put an end to this injustice.

  1. This sheriff was being absolutely ridiculous. Based on his criterium for pulling people over, my own darker-skinned dad would probably have been stopped! Targeting people on the road for no reason other than the color of their skin is something that should have stopped with the Civil Right movement. Unfortunately, racism never really goes away, whether those being discriminated against are African-American or Latino. I'm also glad that the court put an end to this practice.

  2. I also agree that whatever they were thinking with pulling over people just because they were a different skin color is very bad. I agree with Maddie in saying that racial discrimination and discrimination in general never goes away. It can improve but it just can't be completely gone. People don't exactly work like that. But ya if they were just pulling over for no good reason they need to punished and justice needs to be served.

  3. Discrimination is a huge problem in America and we need to take more efforts to end in. Not only just racial profiling, but just any discrimination in general.

  4. It's hard to take a side on this for me because, if the vehicles pulled over did in fact turn out to be doing something illegal or unlawful than I don't care what race they are. If the appropriate prosecution success rate was high than I approve of Joe's good work. Race doesn't have to mean anything, I care about cracking down on crime.
